Water Damage

Water damage can be split into three main categories:
Category 1 Water - Refers to a source of water that does not pose substantial threat to human health and is classified as 'Clean Water'. These are typically internal losses from clean water supplies.
Category 2 Water - Refers to a source of water that contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants and causes discomfort or sickness when exposed or consumed. This is known as 'Grey Water'. This type of water carries organisms and nutrients of micro organisms. Examples include toilet bowl leaks, pump failures, seepage due to hydrostatic failure and water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.
Category 3 Water - Refers to a type also known as 'Black Water' and are grossly unsanitary. This water contains unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria and viral infections, causing severe discomfort and sickness, or worse. Type 3 category issues are caused by contaminated water sources that affect the indoor environment. These include water sources from sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers and streams, ground surface water or standing water. Category 2 Water (or Grey Water) that is not promptly removed from the structure and/or have remained stagnant form 48-72 hours may be reclassified as Category 3 Water. Toilet backflows that originates from beyond the toilet trap is considered Black Water contamination, regardless of the visible content or colour.
There are different ways to deal with the three types of water damage, however one thing is fundamental in all three categories. The quicker you take corrective action the less secondary damage will occur. A speedy response can reduce the results of water damage by up to 90%.
